Sharing Units
A Knowledge Package is like a boxed model kit.
The box is one thing: one Earth Observation application. Open it and you find the separate parts that make it work, from the data and the scripts to the assembly manual and the video showing how it goes together. Each of those parts is a Knowledge Resource.
A part is a real thing on its own. You can pick up one thing, cite it, and use it in another kit. A kit missing some parts still looks fine on the shelf, it just cannot be reused. That is why the GEO Knowledge Hub organises everything into these two sharing units.

The two units
Section titled “The two units”| Unit | What it is |
|---|---|
| Knowledge Package | The box. One Earth Observation application, with everything needed to understand and reproduce it. |
| Knowledge Resource | A part inside the box. One dataset, script, document or video, usable and citable on its own. |
Each has its own page:
Knowledge Package
What goes in the box, what makes a package trustworthy, and how it moves from draft to published.
Knowledge Resource
The kinds of material you can share as a resource, and how a resource relates to the package it belongs to.
More analogies
Two other everyday pictures of the same idea, for when the model kit is not the one that clicks.
