The training is organized into four sessions. Registration opens at 08:00, with breaks at 10:45 and 15:00 and lunch from 13:00 to 14:00.
Training Session 1 - SA-GEO Knowledge Hub (09:00 - 10:45)
Section titled “Training Session 1 - SA-GEO Knowledge Hub (09:00 - 10:45)”Open Knowledge: concepts and principles. Welcome and overview of the training programme, followed by an introduction to the SA-GEO Knowledge Hub, the GEO Knowledge Hub and the Marketplace, including their purpose, value proposition and role in improving access to Earth observation and space-related knowledge.
- Introduction to GEO (Group on Earth Observations), its impact, and why open knowledge matters.
- The GEO Data Sharing and Data Management Principles, and how they relate to the FAIR and CARE principles.
- The Open Knowledge statement and the GEO Data Licensing Guidance.
- Core concepts of open science: reproducibility and replicability.
- The GEO Knowledge Hub and the role of a National GEO Knowledge Hub
Training Session 2 - Creating and Publishing Knowledge Packages (11:15 - 13:00)
Section titled “Training Session 2 - Creating and Publishing Knowledge Packages (11:15 - 13:00)”The GEO Knowledge Hub as a preservation tool - the Knowledge Provider perspective. An interactive, practical session on using the GEO Knowledge Hub to preserve and share content.
- Knowledge Package and Knowledge Resource concepts; open data formats, metadata, protocols and APIs.
- User roles in the GEO Knowledge Hub.
- Hands-on (user perspective): the DataCite metadata schema, persistent identifiers (DOI and others), file preservation and versioning, and tagging (for example, country association).
- Hands-on (provider perspective): creating packages and resources, and best practices for metadata and reproducible content.
- Importing content to the National GEO Knowledge Hub and the South Africa Marketplace.

Session 3 - Leveraging AI and Self-Assessment Tools for Knowledge Development (14:00 - 15:00)
Section titled “Session 3 - Leveraging AI and Self-Assessment Tools for Knowledge Development (14:00 - 15:00)”The GEO Knowledge Hub ecosystem - auxiliary tools for providers. A practical session on the tools that support knowledge package development, content enhancement and discovery.
- Keeping published content sustainable and up to date with the GEO Link Checker.
- Onboarding with the GEO Self-Assessment Dashboard.
- Creating Knowledge Packages with the support of AI and curation.
- The GEO Knowledge Hub documentation and EO-GPT.
Training Session 4 - Community Contributions and Next Steps (15:15 - 16:00)
Section titled “Training Session 4 - Community Contributions and Next Steps (15:15 - 16:00)”Participant feedback, discussion of lessons learned, opportunities to contribute as knowledge providers, and next steps for sustaining engagement within the SA-GEO Knowledge Hub community.
