Description

GVG APP integrates video, GPS and GIS to collect geo-tagged photos along the field. GVG mounted on a car or motor takes pictures with a video camera while moving. When GVG is working, it records images and position from GPS as well as geographic attributes from GIS data layer, for example, county code, into a temporary database. One person is enough to operate GVG in addition to the driver. When the field work is finished, the GVG provides the function to check each image recorded during the sampling. If the image does not contain the arable land, it is discarded, otherwise the proportion of each crop type is manually interpreted or automatic identified using artificial intelligent algorithms. Once all the images for a transect line have been reviewed, it is easy to calculate the proportion of crop types. Crop proportions for a district can be calculated from all transect lines within the district, and the same can be done for a stratum. This sample-based crop type proportion is designed to calculate the crop type area for a certain region especially when satellite-based mapping encounters challenges and has high uncertainty.
