GEO Onboarding webinar 1 - Open Knowledge and its principles
Description
The 11 September webinar introduced participants to the core principles behind the Open Knowledge Statement as part of the GEO Data and Knowledge Working Group's (DKWG) onboarding series. The session began with a presentation by Paola De Salvo (GEO Secretariat), who provided an overview of GEO, its mission, and the work of the GEO Data and Knowledge Working Group in advancing open data and knowledge sharing within the global community.
Following this introduction, Bente Lilja Bye (BLB) and Marie-Francoise Voidrot (One Single Earth) delved into the concept of Open Knowledge and its fundamental principles. They began by defining key components of Open Knowledge, including:
- Open Science
- Open Access
- Open Data
- Open Software
- Open Hardware
- Open Education
- Open Evaluation
- Diversity of Knowledge
- Citizen and Participatory Science
- Open Reproducible Research
Marie-Francoise Voidrot (One Single Earth) then built on these principles by discussing the transition from theory to practice, exploring how these principles can be implemented through various tools and strategies within the GEO community.
The webinar concluded with an interactive Q&A session, allowing participants to engage directly with the speakers and clarify any questions on the topics discussed.
This session provided valuable insights into the importance of open knowledge in advancing global collaboration and how it can be applied to strengthen data sharing, scientific research, and community engagement within the GEO network.
