Description
On 19 February 2026, the Dialogue "In-situ, Satellite, Citizen Science: Interoperability in Practice" brought together experts and practitioners to explore how different types of Earth observation data can better work together. The conversation focused on connecting in-situ data, satellite observations, and citizen science contributions in a practical and coordinated way.
Speakers shared real-world examples from the ENFORCE project, including work to protect urban beaches in Barcelona, address environmental and health challenges in Valle Galeria in Italy, and strengthen water quality monitoring in Indigenous communities in Canada. These case studies demonstrated how citizen science can complement official data sources, strengthen community engagement, and provide timely, local insights to support evidence-based decision-making.
The Dialogue also highlighted the importance of high-quality in-situ data for calibrating and validating satellite products, as well as the urgent need for common standards, interoperable systems, and improved data-sharing practices.
The Group on Earth Observations (GEO) supports these efforts through its GEO In-Situ Data Strategy, which promotes better access, integration, and interoperability of in-situ data worldwide, helping to build a more connected and effective global Earth observation system.
