VISTools - From Data to Models to Tools

  • 1. Flanders Research Institute for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (ILVO)

Description

The continuous flow of data made possible by VISTools opens up opportunities to develop predictive models that support the transition to more sustainable fisheries. Within the Iliad project, two operational models have already been developed, i.e. a Fishing Suitability Model and a Ship Routing Model. In the Fishing Suitability Model, you'll learn how to develop a model that predicts the most suitable areas for fishing specific target species. In the Ship Routing Model, you'll discover how to use fuel consumption data to calibrate a model that simulates optimal shipping routes, maximizing fuel efficiency. The VISTools Documentation website is a Quarto web page which leads you through the code of each model. The Ship Routing Model page is currently under development.

In Addition, model deployment is discussed on the Quarto website. In the Application Packaging and Deployment section, we cover how to containerize the model along with its dependencies by creating a Doccer image. This ensures a seamless, automated system that processes data and generates prediction files efficiently. In the Interactive Visualization section, we will guide you through building a user-friendly web application using R for Shiny that takes these prediction files as inputs and presents them in an interactive dashboard, making insights easily accessible.
