In-situ data for supervised classification and product validation in Sen2-Agri over the South Africa area of interest for the 2017 growing season.
Description
This dataset contains he in-situ samples used to generate the cropland mask and the crop-type map over South Africa. These corresponds to:
- a set of crop type samples characterizing the diversity of the cropland class;
- a set of non-cropland samples corresponding to the main other land cover classes.
The different classes comprise: Bare soil, Barley, Build-up surface, Fallows, Forest, Grasses and other fodder crops, Grassland and meadows, Lupins, Oilseed crop, Perennial crops, Shrub land, Water bodies, Wheat.
Reproducibility
In-situ samples must be collected according to JECAM Guidelines for cropland and crop type definition and field data collection, as this is the format used by Sen2-Agri. The samples must be polygons, not points as this allows high precision in mapping at parcel level.
Polygons must:
- Each have an area greater than 20 m2
- Not overlap with another polygon
- Be representative of all classes that are to be mapped and contain enough samples of each class
The attributes table must contain the following fields:
- "ID": The ID of the feature, in numeric format (max. lenght is 6, values range from 000000 to 999999
- "CROP": A binary classe in numeric format (0 for non-cropland and 1 for cropland).
- "LC": Land cover class in text format (max. lenght is 70 and contains the name of the crop type or the non-crop class).
- "CODE": Code of the class in numeric (long integer) format. (max. lenght is 8 and relates to the JECAM guidelines.
- "IRRIGATION": State of the irrigation in a numeric format (0 for information not available or not concerned, 1 for irrigated and 2 for not irrigated.
This dataset uses EPSG:32734 - WGS 84 / UTM zone 34S. In general, Sen2-Agri requires that the dataset be in an appropriated WGS 84 / UTM coordinate reference system according to the study area.
