Communities of Practice (CoP) Integrated Workshop and Training 2024

Description

The 2nd Communities of Practice (CoPs) Integrated Workshop and Training 2024 provided participants with enhanced skills and knowledge for leveraging Earth observation (EO) data and tools to address local challenges. The theme was "Empowering national uptake: leveraging Earth observation data and knowledge".

The workshop and training was designed to strengthen national capacity to access, understand, and apply Earth Observation (EO) data, tools, and knowledge platforms in support of decision-making and applications. The workshop brought together members of the CoPs, technical experts, institutions, and practitioners to explore how global EO initiatives and national systems can be better utilised to support local priorities and operational needs.

Key Highlights:

Days 1 & 2: Capacity Building Training: The first two days were dedicated to intensive training sessions on key EO platforms and methodologies. Participants received practical introductions to the GEO Knowledge Hub (GKH) and its value for knowledge sharing. Sessions covered GEOGLAM for agricultural monitoring, Digital Earth Africa (DEA) and its analysis-ready data, and the SANSA EO Catalogue of products and services. A significant focus was placed on the EO Maturity Indicator (EOMI) methodology, where attendees learned about the framework, data collection, and participated in a hands-on assessment survey for South Africa.

Day 3: CoP Integrated Workshop: The final day transitioned to a workshop with the Communities of Practice. An opening session explored the current state and future trends in EO. A key panel discussion focused on "Bridging the gap between technology and local needs," featuring international experts. The workshop concluded with sessions on empowering local capacity, showcasing national initiatives and reviewing outcomes from the EOMI assessment.

Session Themes Include:

  • Introduction to the GEO Knowledge Hub (GKH)
  • Global Agriculture Monitoring (GEOGLAM) approaches
  • Digital Earth Africa (DEA) tools and analysis-ready data
  • EO Maturity Indicator (EOMI) methodology and participatory assessment
  • SANSA EO products and services catalogue
  • Current state and future trends in Earth observations
  • Bridging the gap between technology and local needs
  • Empowering local capacity and collaborative outcomes

The programme successfully equipped participants with practical tools and fostered dialogue on the use of EO to meet national priorities, directly supporting the development of South Africa's EO capacity and the future SA-GEO Knowledge Hub.
