OEMC project use case: Forest management and tracking tools for Croatia

Description

OpenGeoHub has worked closely with the National Parks of Croatia (National Nature Park Papuk), on getting local on-ground data and then using it to train models to compare protected and managed forest over the last 25yrs. Pauk sees an opportunity to build and share data with other stakeholders interested in such data — for example state companies such as Croatian Forest (https://www.hrsume.hr/) or Croatian Waters (https://voda.hr/hr).

Stakeholder needs:

  • Papuk is looking for support for using EU-wide and national data products and tools for monitoring / tracking status of resources. There are often overlaps in how the forest resources are managed (Nature Park vs Croatian Forests) and geospatial tools with info for the past 25+ years could help improve decisions (multicriteria decision systems),
  • Papuk is not aware of all Copernicus Land Monitoring Services products and all Landsat-based products — where to find the data and how to access it in QGIS?
  • Staff at Papuk are looking for an open source application to be able to collect ground data (on mobile phones) that can then be loaded and used directly in a GIS,

Implementation steps include:

  • OpenGeoHub has visited Papuk, provided training and helped improve forest management and tracking primarily based on EO data processed independently by OEMC consortium,
  • Install local copy of G3W suite and import all data (i.e. build a local prototype webGIS for PP Papuk); provide training on how to use MerginMaps.com app on mobile phones to quickly collect ground data and display in QGIS,
