SCO FrichesAgricoles : mapping agricultural wasteland in Occitania (France)

Description

The SCO Friches Agricoles project aims to map agricultural wasteland in Occitania, in order to support initiatives to redevelop these areas while respecting their multifunctionality.

Details

In Occitanie, the rise of agricultural wasteland is a growing concern: resulting from the abandonment or deterioration of arable land, these areas can be the source of fires and harbor harmful organisms. It is therefore essential to better understand and locate these wastelands in order to prevent risks and promote the multifunctionality of agricultural land, thereby strengthening food sovereignty.

To meet this challenge, the project is deploying an innovative methodology built around three application bricks. Firstly, the Vigifriche collaborative mobile application enables agricultural wasteland to be located and assessed in the field, providing a concrete view of the situation. Secondly, the WaSaBi algorithm, based on satellite data from Sentinel-2 and other sources, anticipates potential wastelands, facilitating the planning of rehabilitation actions. Finally, a consultation and decision-making application enables users to cross-reference brownfield data with other information relevant to land management.

The aim of this project is to consolidate and extend these tools throughout the Occitanie region, based on field verification campaigns and iterative learning loops. Expected results include the creation of a reliable inventory of agricultural wastelands, a searchable database and an operational service to monitor their evolution. This approach will thus contribute to strengthening the resilience of territories in the face of the complex issues associated with agricultural wastelands, while offering prospects for the transfer of this methodology on a national scale.
