Mapping Convenient Access to Public Transport in Cities with Global Open Data (SDG Indicator 11.2.1)

Description

United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 is "Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable." Improving access to public transport services is integral in achieving the objectives of SDG 11. According to Sustainable Transport, Sustainable Development, a 2021 UN interagency report, "Only about half the world's urban population have convenient access to public transport." The report highlights that access to sustainable transport can help reduce food insecurity, boost economies, empower women, and connect people to key health, education, and finance services. In order to help monitor progress towards achieving SDG 11, the UN has established SDG indicator 11.2.1: "Proportion of population that has convenient access to public transport, by sex, age, and persons with disabilities."

This knowledge package includes resources related to the production of a data set presenting SDG indicator 11.2.1 for 5,749 urban centers across 178 countries, computed using global open data sources. Production of the data set was completed in support of the Population and Infrastructure on Our Human Planet project, part of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Human Planet Initiative (HPI).

The methodology employed was informed by the official UN SDG indicator metadata acquired from the SDG Indicators Metadata Repository.
