LITTOSCOPE: estimating coastal flooding
- Creators
- Space Climate Observatory
Description
The LITTOSCOPE tool identifies and evaluates the risks of coastal flooding caused by rising sea levels and extreme weather.
Maps Flood Risks:
- Predicts areas that could face permanent flooding (due to sea level rise) or temporary flooding (from storms and tides).
- Provides projections for specific years: 2030, 2050, 2070, and 2100.
Models Different Scenarios:
- Simulates three sea-level rise trends:
- Current trends observed since 1992.
- Optimistic projections (low rise with global ecological measures).
- Worst-case projections (high rise without ecological measures).
Estimates Impacts:
- Analyzes how flooding will affect people, economies, environments, and cultural heritage in the area.
- Provides a risk indicator that summarizes the level of danger for these factors.
Supports Decision-Making:
- Offers an interactive platform where users can view maps and explore 24 flooding scenarios.
- Helps local authorities plan and take actions to reduce risks and protect communities.
LITTOSCOPE uses advanced data and modeling to give a clear picture of future coastal flooding risks and helps authorities make informed, sustainable decisions.
